PEN’s 2009 Beyond Margins Award Winners. $1,000. Winners: Uwem Akpan for Say You’re One of Them (Little, Brown and Company), Juan Felipe Herrera for Half of the World in Light: New and Selected Poems (University of Arizona Press), and Lily Hoang for Changing (Fairy Tale Review Press).

2009 McArthur Fellows. $500,000 each over the next five years. Winners: Edwidge Danticat, Novelist; Deborah Eisenberg, Short Story Writer; Heather McHugh, Poet.

2010 New Hampshire State Council on the Arts Fellowships. $5,000. Winners: Fiction writer Nancy Clark and poet Katie Umans.

2009 Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Awards. $25,000. Winners:

Glimmer Train July Very Short Fiction Award. Winners:

First place: J.P. Lacrampe. $1,200 for “Farmers’ Market.” and publication in the Winter 2011 issue of Glimmer Train Stories.
Second place: Stephanie Reents. $500 for “The Indefinite Article Is a Different Story.”   
Third place: James Scoles. $300 for “To Cook an Egg Gently.”

Glimmer Train August Short Story Award for New Writers. Winners:

First place: Evan Christopher Burton. $1,200 for “Exposure” and publication in the Winter 2011 issue of Glimmer Train Stories.
Second place: David Rothman. $500 for “Guided by Voices” and publication in an upcoming issue of Glimmer Train Stories, raising his prize to $700.
Third place:  Scott Tucker. $300 for “Touring.”

New Letters Magazine’s Annual Writing Competition. $1,500 and publication in the Winter 2010 issue of the magazine. Winners:

The Alexander Patterson Cappon Fiction Prize: Siobhán Fallon for “Inside the Break.” The Dorothy Churchill Cappon Essay Prize: Rose Bunch for “Norman Mailer is Coming to Dinner.”
The New Letters Poetry Prize: Heather Bell for “Aunt Marjorie” and other selected poems.
Judges: Benjamin Percy (fiction), Robin Hemley (essay), and Kim Addonizio (poetry).

24th annual Don and Gee Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting.  $30,000 each for five awardees. Finalists:
