2008 Man Booker Prize. £ 50,000. Winner: Aravind Adiga from India for his debut novel White Tiger.

2008 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. $25,000. Winner: Henri Cole for Blackbird and Wolf. Judges: Lucie Brock-Broido, B.H. Fairchild, and John Koethe.

New Hampshire State Council on the Arts Fellowships. $5,000 each. Winners: Fiction writer Clark Knowles and Poet Jennifer Militello.

Glimmer Train July Family Matters Competition. Publication in Glimmer Train Stories. Winners: 1st Place: $1,200, Nellie Hermann forCan We Let the Baby Go?” 2nd Place: $500, Stephanie Freely for “Us Hungarians.” 3rd Place: $300, Rolf Yngve for“Going Back for His Brother” Judge: Marvin Bell.

2008 Two Review Poetry Contest. Publication in 2009 issue of Two Review. Winners: 1st Prize: Rohith Sundararman for“Clearing Up the Waterway.” 2nd Prize: Roy Mash for “Cartwheels.” 3rd Prize: Richard Jordan forHappy Meals.” Judge: Marvin Bell.

The Jane Bingham Award in Playwriting. $500 and production by the Black Swan Theater. Winner: James McLindon for Distant Music.

National Book Award Finalists. Novelists Peter Matthiessen, Marilynne Robinson, Rachel Kushner, and Salvatore Scibona; Kathi Appelt in the young people’s literature category; Journalist Jane Mayer; Poets Frank Bidart, Mark Doty, Reginald Gibbons, and Richard Howard; and YA fiction writer Laurie Halse Anderson
