Poetry Bombing: One Poet's Fashion-Friendly Poem Dispersal Project

July 8, 2011

According to a post on The Sweet Pursuit, an arts and culture blog, there’s a woman visiting the city of Miami’s thrift stores with the objective of surreptitiously sewing poetry into the clothing. This woman-turned-poetry-activist is Agustina Woodgate and her project is known as Poetry Bombing.

Patrons at “bombed” Miami thrift stores find themselves picking up a shirt or coat and discovering a few lines of poetry sewn into the collar: “Life is a huge dream / why work so hard?” (from Li Po’s “Waking Up Drunk on a Spring Day”).

“Sewing poems is a way of bringing poetry to everyday life just by displacing it, by removing it from a paper to integrate it and fuse it with our lives,” said Woodgate, who began the project at O, Miami, a spring poetry festival. “Sometimes little details are stronger when they are separated from where they are expected to be.”
