• In honor of Mary Oliver’s birthday on September 10, Vanessa Willoughby writes about how Oliver’s poem “When Death Comes” helped save the life of a 13-year-old suffering from depression.
• Trinity University Press’s Maverick Book Club convenes on September 14 at 7 p.m. with Char Miller, author of West Side Rising: How San Antonio's 1921 Flood Devastated a City and Sparked an Environmental Justice Movement, in conversation with Sarah Zenaida Gould.
• In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Simon & Schuster will host authors John Paul Brammer, Zoraida Córdova, and Reyna Grande on Wednesday, September 15, at 1 p.m. for a live book chat and sweepstakes.
• City Lit Books kicks off the September installment of The Poetry Salon with feature poet Keli Stewart on Wednesday, September 15. The Open Mic is open to all poets—sign-up begins at 7:15 p.m. Readings will begin at 7:30.*
• Left Bank Books welcomes acclaimed Forward Prize winner, novelist, and poet Kei Miller in discussion of his new book, Things I Have Withheld, on Facebook Live on Wednesday, September 15, at 8 p.m. Miller will be in conversation with award-winning poet and author Rajiv Mohabir.
• Celebrate the launch of Mi María: Surviving the Storm, a new book from Voice of Witness and Haymarket Books, with a roundtable conversation about the aftermath of Hurricane María in Puerto Rico on Thursday, September 16, at 5 p.m.
• Magers & Quinn will host a virtual book launch and conversation with Catherine Dang, author of Nice Girls, on YouTube Live, Thursday, September 15, at 8 p.m.
• Left Bank Books hosts an evergreen range of exciting book clubs, and the next two weeks are no exception! • In celebration of the release of their second book, Villainy, Andrea Abi-Karam will be reading along with NM Esc, Sahar Khraibani, Andrea Lawlor, Eileen Myles, and Kamelya Omayma Youssef on Friday, September 17, at 7 p.m. Hosted by Books Are Magic.
• Winers Book Club is reading Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta and will meet to discuss on Wednesday, September 22, at 7 p.m.
• Rattle magazine is hosting a day of poetry, featuring prominent poets Kathleen McClung & Michael Meyerhofer, in Wrightwood on Sunday, September 19 at 2 p.m. All proceeds go to the Wrightwood Arts Center.*
• Presented by the Poetry Lab, the Visiting Artist Sunday Series is offering a one-day workshop with accomplished poet Jubi Arriola-Headley. This interactive workshop is open to all artists and will take place on Sunday, September 19 at 4 p.m.
• After a year-long postponement, the Chicago Literary Hall of Fame will welcome a new class on Sunday, September 19, at 8 p.m. at City Lit Theater.*
• Books Are Magic hosts a panel discussion about bestselling author Brendan Kiely's new book, The Other Talk: Reckoning with Our White Privilege on Monday, September 20, at 7 p.m. Kiely starts a conversation with white kids about race in this accessible introduction to white privilege and why allyship is so vital.
• Author Naomi Hirahara will appear in conversation with Densho’s Brian Niiya to discuss her new mystery novel, Clark and Division, on Tuesday, September 21, at 3 p.m. This event is copresented by Tadaima! and Elliott Bay Book Company.
• Acclaimed poet Michael Bazzett will lead a two-session workshop September 21 and 23 at 4 p.m. titled “Tell Me a Story: Evoking Narrative in Poetry & Vignette.” Presented by San Miguel Literary Sala, this workshop is “an exploration of how story is evoked.” Register for this interactive live workshop on San Miguel Literary Sala’s website.
• Powell’s Books will host Defne Suman as she presents her new novel The Silence of Scheherazade. Suman will be joined in conversation by Maureen Freely, president of English PEN and author of Sailing Through Byzantium, on Tuesday, September 1, at 10 p.m.

• The Poetry Foundation presents a special online Young People’s Poetry Day featuring illustrious poet Marilyn Nelson on Saturday, September 25, at noon. The reading will be followed by a live Q&A and an interactive activity.
• Poets Denise Miller and Cornelius Eady will read their work for the Poets in Print Reading Series, cohosted by Kalamazoo Book Arts Center, on Saturday, September 25, at 7 p.m.
• AWP Board Member James Tate Hill will read from his new memoir, Blind Man’s Bluff, at West Virginia University on Monday, September 27, at 7 p.m. Hear his personal story about pretending to see as a legally blind man and his journey through high school, college, and grad school to find his way, physically and figuratively.*
