On Thursday, December 13, Tin House publisher and editor in chief Win McCormack announced that the literary journal will close in June of 2019. The final issue will celebrate Tin House’s 20^th anniversary. “Given the current costs of producing a print literary magazine, I have decided to shift resources to Tin House’s other two divisions: Tin House Books and the Tin House Workshop,” McCormack wrote in a statement published by LitHub.

Launched in 1999, Tin House maintained its focus as a publishing opportunity for both established and undiscovered writers across the country, and will continue that mission into its next chapter. “We will continue to publish original fiction, nonfiction, and poetry online at tinhouse.com, with a focus on publishing new voices, a cause the magazine championed throughout its 20-year history,” McCormack added.

“I am proud of the magazine’s dedication to promoting new voices and lifting up overlooked ones, for leading the way in gender balance among literary magazines, and for expanding the ethos of inclusivity and genre-bending to our book division and summer workshop,” wrote coeditor Rob Spillman.

Publishing roughly twelve titles a year, Tin House Books has garnered national attention as a press from outlets such as the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and elsewhere. The Tin House summer and winter workshops attract young and established writers from across the country for seminars, workshops, and readings.

“I’m grateful to Rob Spillman, Elissa Schappell, and Holly MacArthur, and the entire magazine staff, current and past, for their part in creating a vital, versatile outlet, and hosting important literary and cultural conversations over the past 20 years,” stated McCormack. “It has been a remarkable run.”
