HarperCollins to Release Tolkien Novel in August
April 17, 2018
Another installment in the mythical world of J.R.R. Tokien’s Middle-earth is set to be published by HarperCollins in August 2018. Edited by Christopher Tolkien, son of The Lord of the Rings author, The Fall of Gondolin follows the release of another “found” Tolkien story, Beren and Lúthien, published in 2017.
John Garth, Tolkien scholar and author of Tolkien and the Great War, noted that the story was written while Tolkien was in a hospital following the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest battles of WWI. “It’s a template for everything Tolkien wrote afterwards,” said Garth.
The Fall of Gondolin completes Tolkien’s three “great tales” of the Elder Days, according to HarperCollins. The previous two include Beren and Lúthien and The Children of Hurin, the latter being finished by Christopher Tolkien and published in 2007.
The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit were the only Middle-earth stories published while J.R.R. Tolkien was alive. He passed away in 1973. Since his death, Christopher Tolkien has edited and published the majority of his father’s work that is available today, according to CNBC.
