Two Bookstores Win 2017 Pannell Awards
May 16, 2017
The Women’s National Book Association has announced two bookstores as the winners of the 2017 Pannell Awards, cosponsored by the Penguin Young Readers Group, Publishers Weekly reports.
The winner in the General Bookstore category is Bookworm of Edwards in Edwards, Colorado, for its adopt-a-reader program, which provides books for children in need. In the Children’s Specialty Bookstore category, the winner is Children’s Book World in Los Angeles, whose commitment to diverse books and “Readers & Writers Rock!” program won them the recognition.
The committee that administered this year’s awards included Susan Katz Radin, publisher emeritus at HarperCollins Children’s Books; Josalyn Moran, children’s publishing consultant; Emily Romero, senior vice president of marketing at Penguin Young Readers; Rogger Sutton, editor in chief of the Horn Book; and Lisa Von Drasek, curator of the Children’s Literature Research Collections at the University of Minnesota.
Each bookstore will receive $1,000 and a framed work of art from a children’s book illustrator at BookExpo’s Children’s Book and Author Breakfast on June 2, 2017.
The Women’s National Book Association (WNBA) established the Pannell Awards in 1981 “to recognize and publicly applaud the work of booksellers who stimulate, promote, and encourage children’s and young people’s interest in books.” Read about the former winners on the WNBA’s website.
