Some things that caught our attention this week.

An open letter has been written by Oliver Bendorf, and signed by more than 3,000 others (as of Friday morning), concerning an article by Daniel Harris (“The Sacred Androgen: The Transgender Debate”) in the newest issue of The Antioch Review. The letter accuses the article and magazine of transphobia. The Review’s press release about the issue declares that the article is meant to “stir controversy and lead to discussion.” The letter denounces The Antioch Review’s “decision to not only publish this piece, but to subsequently tout it on social media as ‘not-to-miss,’ ‘sure to entertain, intrigue, and provoke,’ and an opportunity ‘to take our debate to a new level on the topic of transgenders’ [sic],” and asks “for accountability from the editors for this decision.” Antioch College has posted its own statement in reaction to the debate over the Review’s publishing the article.

Nominees for the Shirley Jackson Awards have been announced. The awards, named after the author of classics like The Haunting of Hill House, We Have Always Lived in the Castle, and “The Lottery,” honor outstanding achievement in the literature of psychological suspense, horror, and the dark fantastic.
