E-book Sales Drop During First Quarter of 2015

July 22, 2015

E-book sales dropped in both adult and children’s/young adult categories by a combined total of 39.1 percent, according to a recent report by the Association of American Publishers’ StatShot program.

Overall, book sales—of audio, physical, and electronic literature—were down 6.6 percent compared to 2014’s first quarter, but with adult e-books down by 2.5 percent and children’s/YA e-books down by a staggering 36.6 percent. In addition, children’s/YA hardcover and paperback titles are down by 15.9 percent—a rough start for young people’s literature this year.

In contrast, sales of print and audio adult books rose by 3.4 percent, which is good news for those of us championing the benefits of reading physical literature in the digital age.

E-book sales of adult books accounted for 30 percent of all sales, which is down from 31.8 percent last year; e-books of children’s/YA titles accounted for 12.6 percent of all sales for the first quarter this year, which is down from 16.7 percent of last year’s first quarter. This means that e-book sales for these two categories dropped by a total of 8.1 percent in the first quarter.
