Amazon's "New Adult Policy"

June 1, 2009

An alleged “glitch” by Amazon resulted in a wave of outrage as patrons realized in early April that “adult titles” had been removed from the sale rankings, according to Publisher’s Weekly. Though a spokesperson for Amazon initially claimed that a glitch had caused the feature error, Mark Probst, a member of the Erotic Authors Association, whose title was affected by the mishap, claims that a customer service representative from Amazon responded to an inquiry of his by explaining that, “adult material” had been removed from several lists as a “consideration of our entire customer base.” Among the titles are bestsellers such as Annie Proulx’s Brokeback Mountain and James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room and AWP Award Series Winner Sue William Silverman’s nonfiction work, Because I Remember Terror, Father, I Remember You.
