Suit to Catch a Phony

June 1, 2009

J.D. Salinger on June 1 sued the author and publisher of a planned sequel to The Catcher and the Rye, according to Reuters. The author, identified as J.D. California, and Swedish publisher, Nicotext, of 60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye were named in the suit. Salinger’s action seeks to block publication of the book, which, according to Amazon.com, is slated for a September release. The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, describes Salinger as “fiercely protective of his intellectual property” and says he “would not approve of defendants’ use of his intellectual property.”
