University Press Pairs with Internet Giants

February 1, 2009

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, The University of Minnesota Press announced a new program in late November, which will make readily available almost every book it has published since its founding in 1925. The program, Minnesota Archive Editions, brings together the Midwest publisher, Amazon.com, Google, and the Minneapolis company BookMobile. Under the agreement, Amazon will digitize the out-of-print books. The digital versions will then be available for review using Google Book Search. If a reader decides to purchase a book, the transaction can be completed through a link to Amazon.com or through the press’s website, which will funnel the work to BookMobile. In either situation, once an order is confirmed, the book is printed and shipped to the customer. Douglas Armato, the press’s director, said that roughly 660 books are currently available with another 350 or so planned for the future. “It has familiarized us in a remarkable way with our backlist,” Mr. Armato said. “It really amounted to an archaeological dig.”
