Betty Friedan Dies at 85

On February 5, 2006, the New York Times reported the death of Betty Friedan, whose book, The Feminine Mystique, was said to have ignited the contemporary women's movement in 1963. Friedan helped found the National Organization for Women, and was a founder of the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws. According to the New York Times, Friedan worked with Gloria Steinem, Bella Abzug and others to found the National Women's Political Caucus in 1971. She died of heart failure at her home in Washington.
