The C.S. Lewis Bible, Now on Sale

May 1, 2011

HarperCollins, in late 2010, released The C.S. Lewis Bible that has since seen criticism and strong sales, according to Christianity Today. At this point, Lewis’s posthumous career has seen a lot of activity; movie deals, millions of copies of his work reprinted and sold, generous support from literary scholars and adoring Christians, and now his very own edition of the Bible. This edition pairs bits of Lewis’s writing with relevant passages of the bible, serving as Lewis’s assumed interpretations.
Many critics of the Lewis Bible claim that it’s simply just a sales tactic. C.S. Lewis can help sell Bibles and that it tarnishes his legacy.

Jerry Root, professor at Wheaton College and co-consulting editor on the book doubts “Lewis’s feathers would have been ruffled by this Bible, except… he might have been embarrassed that someone would use his writing and attach it to the bible.”

In addition to the planned release of more movies in the Narnia series and the publication of Lewis’s unfinished translation of the Aeneid, in 2012 the inaugural semester of C.S. Lewis College is expected to begin in Northfield, Massachusetts.
