Make the World a Library

February 1, 2011

Happy 10th birthday to BookCrossing.com, the world’s largest book tracking project! The concept of BookCrossing is simple: register a book online for free by labeling it with a unique number then give the book to someone or leave the book somewhere “in the wild” (such as on a bench or on a book swap shelf at a coffee shop). With a little luck, the book will be picked up, reviewed by another reader, and then re-released to be picked up by someone else. This small act works in a “pay it forward” kind of way to promote literacy, brighten a stranger’s day, expose readers to new-to-them books and authors, connect people through a shared book as it travels all over the world, and free up space on your own bookshelf so you can buy more books. From April 15–17, the annual BookCrossing Convention will return to the United States to be held in Washington, D.C. BookCrossers from all around the world will meet to share their love of literature. You can find out more about the convention at http://www.bcindc.zoiks.org/.
