Literary Journals are Thriving

April 22, 2011

While bookstores continue to struggle and print media in general already has one foot in the grave, the literary journal seems to be thriving, according to the New York Times. In the last decade, the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses’ membership has grown to more than twice its size, from 230 publications and presses to over 500.

Journals such as ZYZZYVA, The Rumpus, and The Threepenny Review, all from the San Francisco Bay Area, aren’t exactly making big bucks with each new issue they publish, but with small staffs, savvy web-usage, and very low costs, they make it easy to continue to put out great literature, artwork, and criticism for small but dedicated audiences.
