Mobile Library in Mexico City

July 16, 2013

Mobile Library

A new project brings books to the streets of Mexico City. Local arts nonprofit Alumnos 47 converted a Freightliner M2 20K truck into a 215 square-foot mobile library with the capacity for 1,500 books on visual art and culture. Alumnos47 hopes that driving the library throughout the streets of Mexico’s capital throughout the summer will promote a surge of interest in contemporary art. The mobile library will offer workshops, seminars, and special events wherever it stops. In an attempt to create the atmosphere of both library and cultural center, books are stacked on overhead trays, freeing up the main floor for the events. According to Citlali López Maldonado, the Mobile Library Coordinator at Alumnos47, "the purpose is not just to bring books to citizens into public space but to take out contemporary art products from their common places of consumption, such as galleries and restricted libraries."

The future plans for Alumnos 47’s mobile library include going east visiting the Iztapalapa neighborhood and Ciudad Nezahualcoyotl. The hopes are that this will become a permanent project.
