- Writers and Books believes that reading and writing build empathy and bring people together. The organization hosts workshops, master classes, readings, youth programs, and more.
- Free Minds Book Club builds community by fostering development for justice-involved youth and adults through various forms of literary advocacy.
- Girls Write Now is an organization devoted to training the next generation of writers and leaders.
- Lake Erie Ink connects volunteers with school-age youth to provide academic support, host creative writing workshops, offer in-school writing support, and encourage youth to use writing a means of self-expression.
- DFOWW Incorporated’s Write-Right Literary Program provides GED classes for families and children of low-literacy.
- Literary Arts is a community-based nonprofit that creates literary community around books, storytelling, and the ideas and issues they propose. Literary Arts’ programs create opportunities for readers and writers to engage in the literary community.
- Burlington Writers Workshop provides writers with free learning opportunities that help them to develop as artists and authors.
- NaNoWriMo's Come Write in Program helps libraries, bookstores, and other community pillars connect with NaNoWriMo participants in order to build vibrant writing communities.
- Prickly Pear Publishing empowers writers through creative writing workshops in partnership with Red Earth Productions & Cultural Work.
- Just Buffalo Literary Center has plenty of volunteer opportunities including events set-up, greeting, and ticketing; joining the “Street Team” and spreading the word about Just Buffalo Literary Center by canvasing, hanging posters and flyers; and volunteering at their writing center.
- iWriter develops student curriculums that boost confidence and spark student imagination. iWrite offers opportunities that fall outside of standardized curriculum including workshops and publishing opportunities.
- The Book Thing of Baltimore is a community-driven library located in a small warehouse that offers free books to the public.
- Underground Writing is a literature-based creative writing program serving migrant, incarcerated, recovery, and other at-need communities in Washington through literacy and personal transformation.
- Reading Partners works to connect volunteers with struggling young readers and aims to improve literacy skills, build confidence, and foster a lifelong love of reading. They have locations in Baltimore, New York City, Texas, Colorado, South Carolina, California, and Washington, DC, among others.
- The World Literacy Foundation aims to advance children’s learning in remote locations by providing books and other educational resources to disadvantaged youth who are struggling to read or write. They offer volunteer opportunities across the globe.
- Books Through Bars is a volunteer-run group that sends books to incarcerated people across the nation.
- Based in Chicago, Open Books works to inspire youth through volunteer programs focused on literacy, confidence, and creativity.

- Reach Out and Read offers many ways to volunteer, whether by organizing a virtual book drive or volunteering as a reader. They also accept book donations.
